NEW NIKE AIR KUKINI

by Stephanie Oakes

Like all Nike footwear, the original Kukini (1998) was designed to improve the performance for athletes. It was easy to slip into while barefoot, provided cushioning during long distances and offered solid support for a shoe with no laces. After three years of research, design and weartesting the Kukini, Nike is re-introducing the Kukini. With never-before-used Nike materials and a form that takes attentive design to new levels, the 2003 Air Kukini successfully tackles the three major areas of demand for triathletes and hot weather running:

1) Water and Heat Management- Runners frequently dump cups of water on themselves to stay cool during races. Water can pool in a runner's shoes, adding almost an extra pound of weight. In Kona it can reach 114 degrees during the final stages of the Iron Man. These shoes need to breathe.
Solution: Holes were placed in the shoe's outsole to let water escape easily and allow air to circulate through. In product testing, the shoes gained less than 1oz. after sitting in a bucket of water for an hour. A simple, supportive upper with newly engineered woven mesh wicks moisture away and lets air cool the foot.

2) Ample Support/Cushioning- Runners have been looking for an extremely lightweight and breathable shoe that offers ample cushioning. The 2003 Kukini is that shoe.
Solution: The Zoom Air bag in the heel provides a low profile, lightweight and responsive ride. The internal support straps lock the foot onto the cushioning platform. The medial side (the instep/ arch area) is taller to offer more support and prevent unnatural pronation (or a collapsing of the midsole).

3) Quick Transitions- Every triathlete wants to save as much time as possible during a race. It's difficult to lace up when jumping off the bike and flying into the run. Athletes' feet swell a size to a size and a half while running, causing runners to lose valuable time making adjustments.
Solution: Over-sized pull-tabs allow you to grab the shoe and snap it on your foot quickly. Micro-injected Velcro straps close easily and secure the shoe, but adjust with quickness and ease during the race when the feet begin to swell. The Kukini has a smooth supple lining so the runner can save time by not putting on socks but still avoiding blister possibilities.
