NIKE LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE BACKPACK LINE FOR 2002 SCHOOL YEAR...

by Stephanie Oakes

Nike's equipment division introduces BioKNX, a new load management system it has integrated into a line of backpacks for the 2002 school year. BioKNX is the result of 14 months of research and development by Nike Sports Research Lab. Among the innovators on the Nike BioKNX project were experts in sports biomechanics, orthopedic biomechanics, and doctors specializing in spinal cord and neck injury.

An increasing number of experts have raised concern about the excessive weight kids are carrying in their backpacks. The issue has made its way into California and New Jersey legislature during 2002, with each discussing laws that will either limit the weight of packs or number of textbooks issued to students.
To address this increasing problem, Nike's research and development team set out to create the most technologically sound line of school-oriented backpacks available.  Nike's priority was to determine proper load placement in the backpack, relative to the body of a child.
The BioKNX line includes features that distribute weight appropriately and integrate technologies for increased comfort and durability.

"Many of us on the BioKNX team are parents of kids who consistently carry a day of schoolwork and after-school activities in their backpacks," said Martha Moore, global design director at Nike.  "We recognized the urgency for backpack innovation, and through BioKNX, developed a system that allows kids to carry their day in a safer, more comfortable, and more sensible way."

Each of the BioKNX backpacks include the following innovations:

" Internal back panel that mirrors geometry of the spine to control load-shifting and increase mobility

" Internal pocket and cinch strap securing heavy load safely in relation to the body

" Nike Air lumbar pads at point of heaviest load placement on the spine for comfort

" Shoulder straps with AtmosAir® and Confor™ memory foam (used in fighter pilot ejection seats and Formula One race cars) distribute load force over larger area

In addition, Nike has included a mobile phone pocket and CD/audio player pouch in each of its three BioKNX packs:
" BioKNX Tech. Integrates a laptop stash pocket and will retail for $65
" BioKNX Max.  Largest of the BioKNX series; will retail for $75
" BioKNX Duo.  Features skateboard straps and will retail for $75

Nike BioKNX is available in select retail outlets across the United States, as well as at www.niketown.com.
