What to look for in a personal trainer
Last year alone, 6.4 million people signed up at their gyms to work with personal trainers, so it's no surprise I'm frequently asked what to look for when hiring one. It's not enough to find a trainer who is "certified," because there are a lot of easily obtained certifications. Here are some tips to help you in your quest:
A good personal trainer lives, eats and breathes educating others about a healthy lifestyle and must also live one him-or herself. A good trainer must have experience with all types of equipment, from various machines to free weights, and should know aerobic activities from running to spinning to rowing.
A trainer should be a motivator, not a cheerleader. He or she must give clients a vision of what improved health and fitness can help them achieve, e.g., weight loss, a stronger heart and disease prevention. Trainers also should help their clients reach personal goals, such as an improved golf game or marathon readiness or rehabilitation from a shoulder injury. Goals should be realistic and based on body type and personal desire.
Trainers should take a personal interest in their clients. That should go beyond a session at your gym: Good trainers demonstrate an interest in their clients' lifestyles by giving them direction regarding habits, diet, additional aerobic activities and supplements.
Personal training is a business. Trainers should keep up with the fitness industry, know the latest techniques (without being too trendy), read professional journals, do research, experiment, take courses and share newfound knowledge with their clients.
